Freedom Series 2D guitar
My latest 2D guitar is a development instrument. Soundboard and braces are Douglas Fir, a wonderful tone wood. Back and sides are African Blackwood, which together with Douglas Fir gives my favourite guitar sound. And the neck is old figured mahogany; I regularly built with this wood three or so decades ago, valuing its density, stiffness and appearance but it is no longer available. I thought for many years I had none left, but was delighted some months ago to find I still had a small stock; enough, perhaps, for half a dozen guitars.
I have also made changes to soundboard bracing and the bridge, and the result is a magnificent and well balanced sound. I love it, as does everyone who has played it. And it is so beautiful.

This guitar (seen here played by Martin Simpson) is the first of a short series of development guitars I’m especially interested in. Because they are not bespoke and I’m free to build absolutely as I want and incorporate new ideas, I’m calling this the Freedom series. They will all have this unique Birdseye maple headstock with my logo in ebony.
My next Freedom model will be my 12 fret New World, built with the same woods; Douglas Fir, African Blackwood and old mahogany.
