Martin Simpson Signature model

2005 Martin Simpson Mark 2 model

History

In 2002 I built an experimental Model 1 Sicilian with a modified bracing system. I designed this bracing to allow the full length of the soundboard to operate, withstanding the string tension while permitting the free vibration necessary for tone and volume.

I showed it  to several guitarists, including Martin Simpson, who loved it. It was clearly different enough to be considered a model in its own right, so Martin and I agreed to introduce it as the Martin Simpson Signature model.

I built more prototypes, Martin played them, and we both listened. We talked about the changes in sound and how we wanted to take them further, and ended up with not just different bracing, but also a new body shape.
The new guitar had the same overall length and width as my Model 1, but a wider upper bout and a larger lower bout. It was a little deeper, had a 650mm (25.6") scale, an asymmetric bridge with split saddle, ebony binding with birdsfoot, and striking red and white purfling.

Martin took delivery of the first MS signature model in September 2003. It immediately became his main concert guitar.

In 2005 I introduced a Mark 2 version with modified bracing and a new bridge design.  This is now my standard Martin MS model; Martin now plays it alongside his Mark 1.

I build a maximum of six MS models in any year.

Martin says:

My Sobell has been my main guitar for over 15 years; if I take just one guitar to a gig, it's always the Sobell. Sobells have a unique sound, a combination of clarity and power, separation and richness that I don't find in other guitars.

This new guitar is a distinct variation on the Sobell theme. The treble is more bell like than ever and there is an added depth to the bass. Because of its clarity and tone, it's a perfect guitar for quiet slow airs, yet if I want to, I can make it absolutely roar without a suggestion of the sound breaking up; a remarkable achievement .

I just love the sound it makes, and its volume. And not only does it have a giant acoustic sound, it's also magnificent when amplified through the Highlander pickup.
The body shape is exquisite, the attention to detail and finish superb. The neck profile is more comfortable and faster than any other I've played. In the space of a few weeks this guitar has given me intense pleasure and truly inspired my playing.

The Mk 2 contains all the essential qualities of the original; the difference is that it has a smoother and grander sound. As consequence it is also more accessible. And now it’s been played for a few months, it has become what I can only describe as a bulldozer of a guitar, this without losing its more accessible character. I look forward to playing it for years to come.

Materials

The original MS model had a German spruce soundboard, very dark Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a Cuban mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard and bridge.
In additon to these, I now offer alternative woods; Adirondack or Italian spruce for the soundboard, African Blackwood or Wenge for the back and sides, and Wenge or Madagascar rosewood for the neck. All these woods make excellent sounding guitars. Both Wenge and Madagascar are relatively stiff woods, giving a clear sound and allowing a slim neck without affecting rigidity.

Cases

MS Models come in fitted Calton Cases. Standard colours are yellow with red interior (see my news item 19 June 2006 - click here for News 2006), but other colours are available on request.
